spume 在英文中出現已經有 600 年的歷史，早期的例子像是十四世紀的詩人 John Gower 寫的 "She set a cauldron on the fire … and let it boil in such a plight, till that she saw the spume [was] white." spume 源自於法文的 espume 或是 spume，而且可以追溯到更早的拉丁文 spuma。spuma 近似於古英文的 fām，fām 後來就演化成為今日的 foam，也是泡沫的意思。跟 spuma 相近的另一個字是拉丁文中 pumex 也就是現在的 pumice，pumice 指得就是火山爆發的熔漿快速冷卻後還留有泡沫形狀的岩石。
